There's no one right Loctite
I'm a procurement manager at a 120-person packaging and printing company. I've managed our maintenance and print budget ($180,000 a year) for six years, negotiated with more than 40 vendors, and logged every order in our cost tracking system. So when a maintenance request says 'just order some Loctite,' I don't grab a bottle. I ask what the part is going through. There is no universal product. You're choosing between different tools made for different problems. Here's how I separate them.
The false simplification: threadlocker vs. thread sealant
A lot of people use 'threadlocker' and 'thread sealant' as if they're the same. They aren't. Threadlocker locks two mated threaded fasteners so vibration can't loosen them. Thread sealant fills the spiral leak path in pipe threads so fluid can't escape.
If it's leaking through threads, you need a thread sealant, not a threadlocker.
I learned this after a hydraulic fitting on a packaging line kept weeping. The technician asked for red Loctite because 'red is the strong one.' It didn't help. The fitting wasn't backing out; it was leaking through the threads. Once we cleaned the threads and applied a proper thread sealant Loctite (we use Loctite 577 on metal pipe threads), the leak went away. That mistake cost us about two hours of downtime and a second service visit. In other words, the actual cost was far more than the tube.
Scenario 1: You're following a repair manual, like the 2019 Ford Flex manual
If the manual or engineering spec says 'high-temperature threadlocker,' don't substitute a cheaper blue product. The 2019 Ford Flex manual is a good example: certain fasteners in hot, vibrating areas are spec'd for a high-temperature threadlocker. Many service departments satisfy that spec with Loctite 246 because it is red, high-strength, and rated for a higher temperature range than standard blue threadlockers.
This is where the red Loctite temperature range question usually comes up. Standard red Loctite 271 is rated to about 150°C (300°F). Loctite 246 is formulated for higher temperatures, around 230°C (450°F) in the TDS I checked as of January 2025. The exact number can vary by testing method, so verify against the current technical data sheet and your own application.
The price difference between Loctite 246 and a standard blue threadlocker is small, maybe $4 per bottle. The cost of a failed repair is not. If a bolt in a hot, vibrating area backs out, you're paying for diagnosis, re-assembly, and possibly replacement parts. Trust me on this one: $4 is not the place to save.
I only respected the temperature spec after ignoring it once. We had a large-format printer with a heated platen assembly, and the OEM service sheet specified high-temp threadlocker. I approved a substitute blue because it was in stock. Four weeks later, a mounting screw backed out and scored a brand-new printhead surface. The repair part cost $800 plus a service call. The tube of Loctite 246 would have cost about $12. I still have the purchase order in my audit file.
Scenario 2: You're sealing threaded joints
If the issue is a threaded pipe or fitting that leaks fluid, air, or gas, your product category is thread sealant Loctite, not threadlocker. Which exact product? It depends on the fluid, temperature, and thread material. Loctite 577 is for metal tapered pipe threads. Loctite also has versions for stainless steel, aluminum, plastic, and different media like hydraulic oil and LP gas. Check compatibility before buying.
The oversimplification trap is thinking one sealant works on everything. I've seen a cheap paste wash out in hydraulic service because it wasn't rated for that pressure. It was about $6 cheaper per tube. The rework cost, unthreading, cleaning, re-sealing, and re-testing, was closer to $300. If I have one rule in our purchasing system, it's this: use the manufacturer's product selection guide before you buy thread sealant Loctite for an unusual service.
The most frustrating part is when I ask which product the maintenance lead actually needs and they say 'just get the red one.' Red is a color, not a spec. Some red Loctite products are threadlockers; some are high-temperature sealants. You'd think a color would make it simple, but it doesn't.
Scenario 3: Your output is customer-facing, like a border poster
The other half of my job is buying print for our own brand. I cut the marketing budget last year, but I refused to cut the border poster we display at trade shows. Why? Because the tangible version of your company's quality is the first impression. A border poster with sloppy registration or faded color makes an expensive company look cheap.
When I switched from the cheapest print vendor to one who actually checked color, client feedback scores improved by 23%. That number came from our post-event client survey. The per-unit cost went up $50. The perceived value went up much more. That is total cost of ownership, not unit price.
If you're producing a border poster, there are two technical checks worth knowing. First, color tolerance: Pantone's guideline is Delta E less than 2 for brand-critical colors, and a Delta E above 4 is visible to most people. Second, resolution: at 300 DPI, a 3000 by 2000 pixel image prints at about 10 by 6.7 inches. If you need 24 by 36 inches, you need more pixels or you'll get a soft-looking poster. Reprinting a bad border poster costs money; running a bad image in front of a booth costs even more.

This sounds unrelated, until you're the person placing Loctite and print orders. If you want to get an American Express business card, apply as a business, not as yourself. Have your business legal name, tax ID, and a business bank account ready. For a small company, AmEx will still likely review your personal credit, so be prepared to personally guarantee the card. Mostly, it's so we don't have personal-card transactions buried in the corporate audit file.
How to tell which scenario you're in
If you're still unsure, run through these four questions:
- Is a fastener coming loose? Use a threadlocker. If it's a high-temp location, use Loctite 246 or another red rated for that temperature range.
- Is a threaded joint leaking? Use a thread sealant Loctite. Choose the version based on fluid, temperature, and thread material.
- Is it an OEM service procedure? Look up the exact spec. The 2019 Ford Flex manual is one example; if it calls out high-temp threadlocker, don't assume standard blue will survive.
- Is it something a customer will hold or look at? Treat it as brand image. A border poster is not the place to save a few dollars.
The bottom line
Being a cost controller doesn't mean buying the cheapest bottle. It means buying the product that costs the least over the life of the asset. Sometimes that's Loctite 246 at $12 and sometimes it's a $500 border poster run. The expensive option is the rework, the leak, the bolt that backs out, or the printed piece that makes you look sloppy.
Next time someone asks for 'the strongest Loctite,' I ask what it's for. That one question has saved us more money than any coupon code ever did.
